In the fall of 2009, I had just moved home to the Berkshires from working out west for nearly 10 years. I wasn’t sure which direction I was headed next. After talking to a good friend who had went to Sweetwater Guide School and guided for a few summers he suggested I should try going to there as well. In October of 2009, I went to Sweetwater with little idea of what I was getting into. It was 6 degrees most of the week on the water. In the Winter of 2009-2010, I was offered a job at a lodge in Alaska, but I was torn about heading up due to a couple family obligations that same following summer I was to be at the lodge. In February of 2010, I decided to forgo Alaska, stay home and try to create my own guide service with the intention that I would do it for a season then head north to the great land. Little did I know what direction it was headed. It all started with a sketch and a goal. The original idea was to come up with a good name and my goal was to take 25 trips for that summer. From there Berkshire Rivers Fly Fishing was born. I took maybe a half-dozen trips that first year, trying to juggle a full-time job and grinding on my off hours to build BRFF. Working on building my own website was frustrating and it ended up looking so terrible, but it was a start. I focused on perfecting accesses, clearing branches and downed logs and looking for new spots to use. I knocked on a lot of doors looking for access and heard NO a lot! I worked on networking with local business, others in the business, and worked on finding fish daily. Grinding, grinding, grinding. Here we are 10 years later and all the grinding is paying off. It’s unbelievable what this has turned into over the past decade. There have been many times I have said “Ok that’s it, I’m done with this BS” but I’ve always had great people around to give me the extra encouragement to stay the course. Thank you. And thank you to everybody that has pitched in along the way from booking trips, teaching me marketing, helping pull stuck boats out of terrible spots, graphics, web help, moving downed trees, video help, listening to me gripe and supporting BRFF. You’ve helped make my dream come true! I can’t wait to see where this thing will be in another 10 years! We will be celebrating the next 10 months with giveaways and other happenings. Keep your eyes peeled and thank you again!
