My son and I just had a fantastic day fly fishing for the first time with Harry, a superb guide, who had us dialing in on the fly rod technique within 15 minutes! I took my 81 year old dad out with Captain Harry for a Father’s Day float trip in mid June - we were thinking we’d try to get the end of trout season but CPT Harry assured us that smallmouth bass and pike would be just as fun - and he wasn’t wrong! We caught almost 20 smallmouth on what he considered a “slow” day - and I got a pike in the first 30 minutes! My dad said it was the most fun float trip he’s ever been on. I hadn't thought about floating it, but with, at last, highish water this year and a jealous eye on a guide with Berkshire Rivers Fly Fishing, a friend and I took on Harry Desmond. Wowza. We had a four-hour trip, which turned out to be a bit longer, with Harry's infinite patience, and caught some very decent fish, including a fat 18-inch brown. I thought I knew fly fishing, but under Harry's instruction and advice learned even more. I've been with many guides over the years; Harry was a standout. It was a fantastic experience. He's a wonderful teacher -- putting up with my complete lack of experience, and explaining things to me at just the right pace. We had a beautiful day on the water, so that didn't hurt. But more than that, Harry is easy going, clearly loves fishing, and respects the natural world. InfoAugust 12, 2023WICKED GOOD TIME !!!! We did a full day Drift Trip. Scott, our guide, did an amazing job teaching us the technique on how to use a fly rod. He took us into all the hidden spots, where we caught so many small mouth bass and caught a lot of laughs along the way! At different parts of the river where he had us pull in our rods, we up our feet up and enjoyed the beautiful scenery along the Housatonic River. My husband and I took our first float trip on 6/23, and it met and exceeded all hopes for a great fishing day guided by Scott. We found Scott to be timely, extremely personable, very knowledgeable and truly a really genuine guy. The raft trip was luxury fishing at it’s best, easy to fish and we certainly caught a lot of fish. In fact different species, large/smallmouth bass, dace (a new fish to us), perch and rock bass. Oh yeah, and the one the got away a very large pike, an unexpected way to end the float trip. Perhaps that miss combined with Scott’s expertise was the memo to say “come on back” and indeed we will. To end I would also note that owner Harry Desmond is extremely responsive and it is an easy process to book a fishing experience with this company. To set the stage, I have been fly fishing (mostly for trout) for about 10 years and my mother had never been fly fishing before the trip; we were initially going for trout but water levels were low so Harry and Scott proposed floating for smallies instead. I love trout fishing, but I figured it would be nice to float and learn about targeting a new species - Scott delivered on all counts! He managed to put both of us on a ton of fish and adeptly managed guiding two people in the boat with different experience levels so that we both had an absolute blast. Shortly thereafter, my son enrolled at the University of Colorado, and on the drive to and from Massachusetts every school year, we would go out with a guide in Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, etc. Since he graduated, and settled in Denver, we've expanded our reach to BC, Utah and other incredible places. We've caught many 18-24 inch trout and even some ten pounders. It's been great, but unfortunately during these trips, and while I was catching trophy fish, I wasn't learning the fly fishing basics and technical skills to catch a rainbow on my own in a New England river, at least without any consistency. Yesterday, I spent my day with Bernie from Berkshire River Fly Fishing, a great guy with tremendous patients and fly fishing knowledge. I caught a couple small mouths and a few nice brown trout, but much more importantly for me, I spent my day under the tutelage of Bernie and learned more about the art of fly fishing than I did in all of my previous trips. Bernie worked with me on my mend, my casting, fishing with a streamer, and so on; all aspects that needed work. Bernie is a great guy, and taught me the technical aspects of fly fishing that I had been lacking. I would highly recommend Bernie and Berkshire River Fly Fishing no matter one's fly fishing skill level. I know I will absolutely be going back to check in with my "teacher" and would strongly encourage anyone considering a day of fly fishing to head out with the team at Berkshire River Fly Fishing!!Posted on Google

Andrew MarchMay 16, 2022Had a great morning of fly fishing with Scott. Met him around 8 am at the Big Y, then took a really short drive to fishing hole. Scott asked about of experience with fly fishing, then started at the beginning for us. He explained the types of fly fishing, types of flies, when to use each fly, and then got us going. We learned two styles of fly fishing. We caught a bunch of rock bass and brown trout, and were done just after noon. It was a great relaxing more. I got to fish with guide Bernie Saggau and from the get go he was putting me on fish. I think it was third cast and a beautiful nice sized brown trout was in the net. The conditions were challenging with high winds and Bernie found fish and protected areas all day. Bernie was a blast to spend the day with, and always ready with great tips through out the day. Interestingly, the fish were super quiet the first day but by day 2, they were busy testing our streamers. Amazing the difference one day can make. We landed several beautiful brown trout on the second day while floating down the Housatonic River. I was especially appreciative of the guide's respect and care they showed each fish that was caught. We learned to handle them carefully and minimize any trauma. I will be back! D YOctober 19, 2021Spent the day with Harry, first time in the Berkshires region and have only been fly fishing for a few years. I really haven’t explored streamers yet (a little) and this day was a true learning experience. We rotated through various patterns until we found one that the fish wanted and went to work. It rained, was a built chilly (in October) and we caught at least 30 fish, having looked at many, many more and a few larger ones that just wouldn’t commit to the bite. My arm is a bit sore from all the casting, but the fishing was great! I would definitely and highly recommend Harry for a fly fishing trip for anyone that wants to have a great day on the water, learn about fly fishing, and spend a few hours with a great guide.+0Posted on Google

We couldn’t find an available guide mid June 2021 but come the end of July when my grandson came up for a special visit I contacted Harry at BerkshireRiversflyfishing.com and set up a half day Housatonic River boat trip with his guide Scott and what a beautiful day we had. Scott taught us casting , lure selection, knot tying, we had a ball. Scott knows how fish think, and where they hide. Dylan caught 4 fish off the bow Scott got a trout in the first 5 minutes I had some bites but being more interested in the beauty of casting after watching “A River Runs Through it” I would pull up the line and recast just as the bass and trout we’re about to take the fly. Erik YoungMay 17, 2021My dad and I floated the Housatonic for a full day guided trip with Bernie. Couldn’t have asked for a better day. Bernie was knowledgeable and courteous. He had the assortment of rigging and flies for the day which helped us hook up with some smallies and browns. The most BEAUTIFUL colors on these wild fish. I felt so guilty that I accidentally broke his rod tip when I put my boot down on the gunnel of the boat. He said not to worry, accidents happen and there was a warranty on the rod. The discussion never went any further and it didn’t affect the rest of the day. In fact, his partner left him another rod stream-side, just down river. These guides work hard all day; Scott constantly had his eyes on the water looking for hatches and fish, and gave me continuous tips to improve throughout the day.
